He sent this letter to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer
Soldiers in Hartford, Connecticut as U. S. Secretary of War in 1894. It
accompanied an examination of the home's accounts. Lamont was President Grover
Cleveland's Secretary of War and his private secretary when Cleveland was
Governor of New York.
Typed Letter Signed: "Daniel S. Lamont" as U. S. Secretary
of War. Pencil notations at bottom edge and on verso. 1 page, 7¾x10¼, on U.
S. War Department letterhead. Feb. 19, 1894. Addressed to General W. B.
Franklin, President and Acting Manager of the National Home for Disabled
Volunteer Soldiers, Hartford, Connecticut. In full: "Sir:- I have the
honor to transmit herewith statements showing the results of an examination by
this office of the accounts of the H. H. D. V. S. [not enclosed] for the quarter
ending June 20, 1893. The ac-counts have been forwarded to the Second Auditor
for settlement, together with copies of these statements. It might expedite the
final settlement of the accounts if customary amended vouchers, or corrections,
were forwarded without delay to the Second Auditor, through the Secretary of
War. Very respectfully,". Lamont (1851-1905) was President Grover
Cleveland's Secretary of War from 1893 to 1897. Lamont was also his
private secretary when Cleveland was Governor of New York (1883-1885).
Lightly toned and creased. Show-through from mounting residue on verso (does not
touch signature). Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
