Price: $70.00
DANIEL TERRY
Signature of the English actor, a close associate of Sir Walter
Scott
Signature: "Danl Terry", 4x3¼ card, affixed to a 4½x3¼ piece
of paper (2 surfaces). Colored pencil note (unknown hand): "Old time actor
1821/Daniel Terry". Englishman Daniel Terry (1789-1829) abandoned the
study of architecture for a stage career, beginning with supporting roles in
Shakespearean works in Sheffield (1805). He made his London debut at
Haymarket Theatre in Clandestine Marriage (1812). From 1813 to 1822, he
was a member of the Covent Garden company, departing for Drury Lane after a
contract dispute. In 1816, he made his first appearance in a stage adaptation
of a story by Sir Walter Scott: Guy Mannering. Thereafter Terry, an
ardent admirer of Scott who named his son after the novelist, appeared in stage
versions of his works, and helped to write these, although the degree of his
contribution to the scripts is uncertain. Scott, in turn, admired Terry's
acting. Lightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top left corner.
Otherwise, fine condition.
