DANIEL WEBSTER
Daniel Webster signs an autograph sentiment.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Truly & cordially yrs/Danl
Webster", 3½x1¼ clipped signature affixed to a 5x7½ album leaf.Daniel Webster represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate from
1827-1841 and 1845-1850. In 1841, he resigned from the Senate to join
President William Henry Harrison's cabinet as Secretary of State. He stayed
on in Tyler's cabinet, resigning in 1843 and returning to the Senate in 1845.
One of America's greatest orators, Webster once again resigned his Senate
seat to become Fillmore's Secretary of State on July 22, 1850. At the Whig
National Convention held in Baltimore June 17-20, 1852, Secretary of State
Webster received 29 votes on the first ballot; President Fillmore had 133 votes
and General Winfield Scott had 131 votes. Webster's staunch supporters only
succeeded in giving the presidential nomination to Scott on the 53rd ballot.
Gravely disappointed, Webster refused to support or campaign for the Whig
ticket. Shortly before the election, he died in Marshfield on October 24, 1852
at the age of 70. Mounting adhesive shows through on signature slip. Album leaf
slightly soiled, and frayed at left edge where it was removed from a book.
Otherwise, fine condition.
