DANIEL WEBSTER
The rare full signature of Daniel Webster, America's great orator.
Full signature: "Daniel Webster", 3¾x1. "Department of State" is penned in another hand above the signature. Partial free frank stamp below his signature. Mounted to another page of the same size. Statesman and orator Daniel Webster was Secretary of State under Presidents W.H. Harrison (1841), Tyler (1841-1843) and Fillmore (1850-1852). In 1842, he negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty with Great Britain, setting the U.S.-Canadian borderline between Maine and New Brunswick and agreeing that both nations suppress slave trade. Webster, who supported the Compromise of 1850, was disappointed that he had little support for the presidential nomination at the Whig National Convention, held in Baltimore June 17-20, 1852. The efforts of his supporters only succeeded in denying President Fillmore the nomination and giving it to General Winfield Scott. Secretary of State Webster refused to campaign for or support Scott. His health began to fail and he died on October 24, 1852, at the age of 70. Lightly stained at margins from glue mounting. Lightly creased.
