DANNY FORD
Signed b/w bust photo of Danny Ford, who led Clemson University to its only national title, in a suit and tie
Inscribed photograph signed "To Bill Wood/From the/Clemson Tigers/Danny Ford". B/w, 8x10 overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface. IIf you're from Clemson University, you probably know Ford, born Danny Lee Ford in 1947, as the coach who led Clemson to its only national championship in 1981, at least as of this biography. A former All-SEC selection and three-bowl veteran at the University of Alabama, he was an assistant coach at Viriginia Tech for nine years before taking the reins at Clemson in 1978, following the retirement of Charley Pell. At 30, he was the youngest Division I head coach up to that point. Ford led the Tigers from 1978 to 1989, compiling an impressive 96-29-4 record, with six bowl victories (1978, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989) and four conference titles (1982, 1986, 1987 and 1988). 1981, of course, was Ford's standout year, with a 12-0 record, an Orange Bowl win over Nebraska, and the national championship. He left Clemson early in 1990 after clashes with the school's administration and investigations of the football program by the NCAA and his players by the law, and he ended his coaching career at Arkansas (1993-1997) with a 26-30-1. Lightly creased and bowed. Errors in negatives were reproduced in photo. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.
