DANTON WALKER
Danton Walker writes to Louis Sobol for some advice.
TLS: "Danton Walker", 1p, 8½x7¼. New York, N.Y., 1937 September
4. On letterhead of The News to fellow columnist Louis Sobol. In
full: "Would you, as a favor to a tyro in the art of Broadway columning,
indite (sic) a few-but not too few-lines of advice 'To One Who Is About
To Become a Broadway Columnist'? Incidentally, it might amuse you to know that
your column was my first definite inkling that I was to succeed Ed Sullivan. I
was sick abed at my sister's home in Brooklyn when the flash came, via the
Journal-American. Sincerely yours." Danton Walker (1899-1960) was a New
York entertainment columnist. His book, I Believe in Ghosts: True Stories
of Some Haunted Celebrities and Their Celebrated Haunts, recounting stories
told to him by Burl Ives, Noel Coward and Mae West, among others, went through
several editions. He also published a book about his experiences as a
writer: Danton's Inferno. Lightly soiled. Vertical fold touches the
"a" in Walker. Fine condition.
