DAPHNE SLATER
The Shakespearean actress signs her name to a fan, asking if they are
as grateful to Pat Smith as she is. Extremely rare!
Autograph note signed: "To Pat/from/Daphne Slater/(I wonder if you
are as/grateful to Pat Smith as I am!!)", in black ink, 7½x5¼. English
actress Daphne Slater (1928-2012) was best remembered for her
Shakespearean roles on stage and screen. Her acting was often praised by
critic Kenneth Tynan, though he was not the only one to notice her skill;
after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she was offered a seven
year contract by film director Herbert Wilcox. Roles of Slater's include Cynthia
Carmody in The Courtneys of Curzon Street, Elizabeth Bennet in
Pride and Prejudice, and Queen Mary in Elizabeth R.
Left edge notched and frayed. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and
creased. Ink notes (unknown hand) on bottom margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
