DAVE BRUBECK
The jazz performer signs a letter twice for a fan on the verso of a promoting poster
Autograph letter double signed: "Dave Brubeck"; Poster inscribed and signed: "For Peter Harvey From Dave Brubeck", 1p, 8¼x11. No place, no date. Letter reads in full on verso: "Dear Peter, My wife used this old poster as backing for the photo so I just signed it for your personal use." Inscription on verso is at top of a cut poster promoting opening night for The Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Longshore Summer Festival, Westport [Connecticut], July 3, n.y. A popular and creative jazz performer, Brubeck (1920-2012) formed the first of a series of avante-garde jazz groups in 1946. In 1951, he joined alto saxophonist Paul Desmond to form the core of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which became immensely popular with an early hit, "Take Five". Brubeck's compositions "In Your Own Sweet Way", "The Duke" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" have become standards. Characteristic of the group were its experiments with unusual time signatures. The quartet stopped touring regularly in 1967, and Desmond died ten years later, but various versions, many including one or more of his three musically talented sons, continue to play for enthusiastic audiences when Dave's health permits. Nail head-sized smudges on note side. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
