DAVE GARROWAY
As host of the Today show, he steers a request for a public service announcement to NBC's Public Affairs Department, but closes with his on-air farewell phrase, "Peace".
Typed Letter signed: "Dave", 1 page, 8½x11. RCA Building, Radio City, New York, no date. On letterhead of the Today show, in full: "Thank you very much for writing. All public service announcements are assigned to us by Hilda Watson, Room 788, here at NBC; she is in the Public Affairs Department. This is the only way that announcement such as yours can be scheduled on TODAY. Peace". American radio and TV personality Dave Garroway (1913-1982) was the first person to host NBC-TV's Today. Garroway got his start as a disc jockey at WMAQ in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to TV as host of the talk show Garroway at Large (1949-1951) and his relaxed, ironic delivery, his horn-rimmed glasses and his bow ties endeared him to viewers and NBC executives. He was given the reins to Today in 1952 and held them until 1961. For his review of Today in the New York Times, Richard F. Shepard wrote: "He does not crash into the home with the false jollity and thunderous witticisms of a backslapper. He is pleasant, serious, scholarly looking and not obtrusively convivial." Garroway hosted a number of other shows during his tenure and after on Today. His last regular TV job was on CBS's The Newcomers (1971). After this, except for a few guest star appearances, he lived a secluded retirement. Corners lightly worn. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
