DAVE O'BRIEN
Inscribed 5x7 sepia photo, hiding behind a rock with pistol drawn, while smiling
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Joe/Thanks for writing/Dave O'Brien". Sepia, 5x7. Dave
"Tex" O'Brien (1912-1969), who directed under his birth name, David Barclay, began his
film career in the early 1930s as a stunt man and supporting actor, but was starring in B
Westerns before the end of that decade. Among his most highly rated films were Yukon
Fight (1940) and Trail of Terror (1944). He also starred in the Captain Midnight serial
(1942), and he directed and starred in MGM comedy shorts which made full use of his
abilities as a stunt man. Back in supporting roles by the 1950s, O'Brien was the stage
manager in Kiss Me Kate (1953). From 1957 to 1963, he was a TV comedy writer for Red
Skelton. Despite these many contributions to film, O'Brien is probably most recognizable as
the crazed marijuana junkie of Reefer Madness (1936). Slightly creased, with silvering.
Otherwise, fine condition.
