DAVE SEMENKO
The hockey player signs this 5x5½ photograph of himself in Edmonton Oilers uniform
Newspaper photograph signed: "Dave Semenko" in blue ink. 5x5½. David Semenko
(1957-2017) is a Ukrainian Canadian hockey player. He started his hockey career playing
left wing for the WHA before the Edmonton Oilers merged with the NHL in 1979. After the
merge, he played in the NHL for 11 seasons with Edmonton Oilers (1979-1987),
Hartford Whalers (1986-1987), and the Toronto Maple Leafs (1987-1988). A frequent
brawler, Semenko is famous for being one of the toughest NHL players, and was known for
being Wayne Gretzky's enforcer for most of his career with the Edmonton Oilers. His
reputation helped earn him a fight in an exhibition match against boxing great Muhammad
Ali in 1983. After he retired from hockey, he became a commentator on Oilers radio
broadcasts, and later a member of the scouting staff for the team. Lightly toned. Ink note
(unknown hand) on verso. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
