Photograph signed: "Davey Lopes". Color, 8x10. Lopes,
born David Earl Lopes in Providence, Rhode Island in 1945, was a major league
player from 1972 to 1987, mostly for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lopes had 557
career steals and was league leader in steals in 1975 (77) and 1976 (63),
placing in his league's Top 10 for stolen bases nine times. Lopes also
stole five bases in a game on August 24, 1974 to tie a 70-year-old National
League record, and he set the major league record (since broken) in 1975
with 38 consecutive successful steals. He alsostole five in the 1981
National League penant race and added four more in the World Series. Lopes
set the National League Championship Series career record of nine steals, and
his 10 steals in the World Series ranks third. Lopes was a four-time
All-Star between 1978 and 1981 and won the 1978 Golden Glove at second
base. Lopes played for the Oakland A's (1982-1984), combining with Rickey
Henderson to set a record for most stolen bases by 2 teammates (130 steals, 28
of them by Lopes. Since his playing career, Lopes has managed briefly (Milwaukee
Brewers) and coached for several Major League teams, most recently the Phillies.
