DAVID B. HILL. TLS: "David B. Hill", 1p, 8½x7½. Albany, N.Y., 1907 January 10. To Scott C. Bone, "The Washington Herald". Hill cannot attend the annual dinner of the Gridiron Club because "professional engagements will prevent my leaving here at that time...." Hill served as Governor of New York from 1885-1892, succeeding Grover Cleveland who resigned to become President and U.S. Senator from 1892-1897. He tried unsuccessfully to wrest the 1892 Democratic presidential nomination from Cleveland, finishing second in the balloting at the convention. The Gridiron Club was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1885 by newspapermen in response to deteriorating relations between members of Congress and the Washington press. The Gridiron Club still holds its annual dinners where over 2000 journalists, politicians, judges, lobbyists and assorted celebrities gather for an evening of humorous speeches and skits. Creased, lightly worn. Folds. Top edge nicked at left with tip of corner missing. 2 pinhead-size holes beneath date.
