Signature: "David Babych", in purple ink, 3½x6½. Magazine
photograph affixed above signature. David Babych (b. 1961) is a retired
NHL player of Ukrainian descent, playing for 19 seasons with the Winnipeg
Jets (1981-1986), Hartford Whalers (1985-1991), Vancouver Canucks (1991-1998),
Philadelphia Flyers (1997-1999), and the Los Angeles Kings (1998-1999).
Babych was drafted in 1980 by the Winnipeg Jets, with his brother Wayne also
being drafted around the same time. Babych had a successful rookie career, and
was voted to play for an All-Star game as early as 1983. He continued
through his career at a rather steady pace, but suffered from various injuries
along the way that impeded both the amount of games played and the performance
in the games. One such injury would cause him to sue the Philadelphia Flyers
after retiring, saying the team's orthopedic surgeon misdiagnosed a foot injury
as something less severe, and that the injury caused him to end his career
prematurely. While the jury found no evidence of fraud for the surgeon or the
Flyers, Babych was awarded $1.02 million in lost wages and $350,000 for pain and
suffering. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
