David Baltimore a 1975 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine signs a philatelic envelope honoring the Butterfly.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "David Baltimore", 6½x3½. First Day Cover of Butterfly (Euphydras phaeton), 13-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Indianapolis, Indiana, June 6, 1977, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Typed address at lower left margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at mid portion and lower margin detail Baltimore's 1975 Nobel Prize: "Discoveries concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic material of the cell/Dr. David Baltimore (1975 Nobel Physiology & Medicine)". David Baltimore's (born in 1938) early investigations at MIT focused on questions about the relationship between DNA and RNA in a cell's internal functions-specifically, on how cancer-causing RNA viruses manage to infect a healthy cell. One result of this research was the identification of the enzyme reverse transcriptase. Baltimore shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Renato Dulbecco and Howard Martin Temin for this discovery, which has greatly expanded scientists' understanding of retroviruses such as HIV. Baltimore was later involved in a major scientific controversy in which he defended a junior colleague against charges of data falsification. Baltimore, who was named President of the California Institute of Technology in 1997, received the National Medal of Science in 1999. Fine condition.
