Belasco signed this letter, typed on his monogrammed stationery, to John Sagerson in 1930. In it, he thanks Sagerson for wishing his production of Dancing Partner success.
Typed letter signed "Daniel Belasco". Pencil notation in lower left corner. 1 page, 4¾x7¾ fabric-textured stationery with "DB" monogram in upper left corner. Mounted to 10¾x8¼ sheet of cardstock. July 6, 1930. Addressed by "John Sagerson". In full: "Dear John Sagerson: Thank for your message of good wishes for the success of 'Dancing Partner'. I appreciate your kind thought for me. Cordial regards. Faithfully". Belasco (1853-1931, born in San Francisco, California) whose black apparel earned him the nickname "the Bishop of Broadway," was a dominant figure in New York theater for nearly half a century. He wrote, directed or produced over 100 Broadway plays, more than forty of which were made into movies. His famous works included The Heart of Maryland, Girl of the Golden West and DuBarry. Belasco, who built and managed several theaters, was also known for his trendsetting realistic stage sets and innovative lighting techniques. Belasco also influenced Hollywood, mentoring Cecil B. DeMille and giving Mary Pickford her screen name. Letter is lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded in half and unfolded. Mounting card is lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.
