DEACON JONES
Color publicity photograph from the "Hall of Famers" photograph series
inscribed by Deacon Jones to a fan.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Tedd B./Deacon/Jones/Rams".
Color, 7½x10. "Hall of Famers" photo series, titled "The Deacon". Biographic
sketch on verso. Drafted into the NFL in 1961, Jones played for the Rams,
Chargers and Redskins. He was among the first of fast, tough, mobile defensive
linemen. Jones was noted for clean, but hard-hitting play, specializing in
quarterback "sacks", a term he invented, but unfortunately for Deacon, the NFL
didn't recognize it as an official statistic until 1982. He was innovative,
quick-thinking and flamboyant. Jones was unanimous all-league six straight
years, 1965-1970, played in eight Pro Bowls and was NFL Defensive Player of
Year, 1967-1968. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980. Fine
condition.
