DAVID E. HUGHES
Hughes signed this handwritten letter in 1868, expressing thanks for Belgian Monsieur Henehaut's appreciation for Hughes' "apparatus"
Autograph letter signed " D.E. Hughes," 1 page, 5¼x8¼ (folded). Amsterdam, March 13, 1868. Addressed to Monsieur Henehaut, Director General des Telegraphes, Belgium. In French, partially translated. In part: "I thank you for your letter... in which you express such warm appreciation of my apparatus. When I wrote you I did not realize that the Congress would be held so soon in Vienna... I was very pleased to hear from Belgian dispatched of the adoption of my apparatus..." Hughes (1831-1900) invented the carbon microphone, induction balance, and the Hughes electromagnet. He devised an improved version of Royal E. House's printing telegraph and succeeded in having his machine adopted for use in foreign countries. Mrs. Sydney Morse was probably the widow of journalist Sidney Morse, brother of the inventor of the magnetic telegraph, Samuel F.B. Morse. Lightly toned and creased. Minor tear at bottom edge along fold and at top edge. Letter has been folded in half horizontally and three times vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
