The British writer and co-founder of the Nonesuch Press signs this handwritten letter to Powys Evans
Autograph letter signed: "David Garrett.", 1p, 8x10¼. London, 1930 February 12. On letterhead of "The Nonesuch Press Ltd." to "Powys Evans, Esq." Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "I am very sorry to have to refuse your flattering invitation, but I'm afraid I can't find time to sit for you. I am spending the least time possible in London & have a good deal of work to get through when I am there. [two words crossed out] Yours very sincerely". In 1923, DAVID GARNETT (1892-1981) was a British writer and publisher. He was part of the group that founded The Nonesuch Press, which was named after a Tudor palace of the same name, with Vera Mendel and Francis Meynell. The company did not print any books of its own; rather, its purpose was "to be a mobiliser (sic) of other's resources", and the company was "founded in the interest of those among book collectors who also use books for reading." The project for which it was best known was a five-volume Bible, which was printed beginning in 1924. He was also a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group. POWYS EVANS (1899-1981), who drew under the pseudonym "Quiz", was a noted caricaturist who executed 150 celebrity portraits for the "Saturday Review". Over 50 of his works are housed in London's National Portrait Gallery. Name written (unknown hand) on verso (minor show through at upper right margin). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
