Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author David H. Donald drew and
signed this blue ink "self-portrait" of himself in sunglasses in
1981.
Self-Caricature signed: "David/Herbert/Donald
-/A/self-/portrait/1981" in blue ink. 1p, 5¾x9, irregularly cut. Pen-and-ink
bust drawing. Author and historian Donald (1920-2009) won Pulitzer
Prizes in Biography or Autobiography in 1961 for Charles Sumner and the
Coming of the Civil War and in 1988 for Look Homeward: A Life of
Thomas Wolfe. A noted Lincoln scholar, he has also written several
books about Lincoln, including a critically acclaimed biography and several
analyses of the Civil War Era and Reconstruction. Lightly creased with folds,
horizontal fold at hair of drawing. Fine condition.
