Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/D.H.", in black ink,
5½x4¼. David H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was a prolific English writer,
penning several novels, poems, playwrights, and essays. Although highly
regarded now, Lawrence was often viewed negatively during his career,
described as a smut writer due to his most popular novels following the intimate
love lives of young characters. Of these novels, The Rainbow and
Women in Love were most notable, with these and many other novels
illustrating homosexual relationships, alluding to Lawrence's own suspicions of
homosexual relationships from those who surrounded him. Lawrence also wrote
collections of short stories and poems, which fared better than his novels, but
still were not successful. It was not until after his death that Lawrence
received recognition, following Lawrence's personal exile from
civilization due to military suspicion of him being a spy, and the hardships
of poverty. Surface creases. Notched and frayed on left from binding. Lightly
toned. Faint stains across. Otherwise, fine condition.
