DAVID J. THATCHER (DOOLITTLE RAIDER) The Doolittle Raid flight engineer signed this index card in blue ink Signature: "David J. Thatcher/ Engineer-Gunner Crew #7/ Doolittle Tokyo Raid", 5x3 card. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Then-Corporal David J. Thatcher (1921-2016) was the only member of Crew #7, which bombed industrial targets in Tokyo, to get through the mission uninjured. This plane was piloted by Ted Lawson, who wrote the eyewitness account of the raid, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1942). Thatcher served in England and North Africa later in the war. Fine condition.
