Letter from the journalist who would later receive a Presidential
Medal of Freedom, thanking a reader for their opinions about one of his recent
articles
Typed letter signed: "David Lawrence", ¼p, 7¼x10½, affixed to
8½x11½ sheet. Washington, D.C., 1968 April 15. On his personal letterhead
to Miss Corinne R. Manning, Washington, D.C. In full: "Your letter has
been forwarded to me by the Evening Star, and I was glad to know of your
reaction to my dispatch and to have your comments. It seems to have struck a
responsive chord in many readers, and I appreciate your thought in letting me
have your views." In 1933, journalist David Lawrence (1888-1973)
founded "U.S. News", which became "U.S. News & World Report" in 1947.
Lawrence, who had previously published "United States Daily" (1926-1933), also
wrote a syndicated political news column and was a member of
Washington's Press Corps. He chronicled his experiences in Diary of a
Washington Correspondent (1942), and his books also include The True
Story of Woodrow Wilson (1924), Beyond the New Deal (1934) and
Nine Honest Men (1936). In 1970, Lawrence received a Presidential Medal
of Freedom from President Richard Nixon. Slightly yellowed at right margin,
slightly soiled at lower right margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light
surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
