DAVID LAWRENCE. TLS: "David Lawrence", ¼p, 7¼x10½. Washington, D.C., 1964 June 23. On his personal letterhead to Mr. Carlton J. Corliss, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter and the enclosure. I have had a photostat made of it and am returning the original to you. Thanks again." Slightly soiled, paper clip rust stains at upper left blank margin. Fine condition. Accompanied by the original newspaper article mentioned in this letter, affixed to 7¼x10½ sheet. Titled: "Fourth Finds Old Liberties Fading". Typed at upper margin of article: "Wash. (D.C.) Eve[ning] St[ar]/July 4, 1939". The article, written by Lawrence, is subtitled: "March of Dictators Leaves Narrowing Area of Free Men". Captioned photograph of Lawrence, b/w, 1x1¾, at mid portion of the first of 3 columns affixed to sheet. Ink note (unknown hand, likely Corliss') at lower margin of mounting sheet: "Editor U.S. News & World Report". Lightly yellowed. Chipped at upper blank edge of second column. Fine condition. In 1933, journalist David Lawrence (1888-1973) founded "U.S. News", which became "U.S. News & World Report" in 1947. Lawrence, who had previously published "United States Daily" (1926-1933), also wrote a syndicated political news column and was a member of Washington's Press Corps. He chronicled his experiences in Diary of a Washington Correspondent (1942), and his books also include The True Story of Woodrow Wilson (1924), Beyond the New Deal (1934) and Nine Honest Men (1936).
