DAVID LAWRENCE. TLS: "David Lawrence" as Editor, 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C. 1955 September 19. On letterhead of U.S. News & World Report to Mr. H. Keith Thompson, New York, New York. In full: "Thanks ever so much for your letter of September 15. I found on my desk this morning a letter from Mr. Huxley-Blythe, but have not had a chance to read it yet. I wanted to let you know that it has arrived. I notice that you are a correspondent for a newspaper in Argentina. Is it a daily newspaper? Is it the only German-language newspaper in Argentina? I have always been interested in the newspaper situation in Argentina. Have you ever served there yourself?" In 1933, journalist DAVID LAWRENCE (1888-1973) founded "U.S. News", which became "U.S. News & World Report" in 1947. Lawrence, who had previously published "United States Daily" (1926-1933), also wrote a syndicated political news column and was a member of Washington's Press Corps. He chronicled his experiences in Diary of a Washington Correspondent (1942), and his books also include The True Story of Woodrow Wilson (1924), Beyond the New Deal (1934) and Nine Honest Men (1936). H. KEITH THOMPSON, a Yale graduate with a background in military and maritime law, was a specialist and researcher of war crimes trials. In addition to compiling a comprehensive private library on the subject, he co-authored the book, Dönitz at Nuremberg: A Reappraisal (1976). Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
