DAVID MICHAEL MOUNTBATTEN, MARQUESS MILFORD HAVEN III The Marquess pens his name on this slip of paper in black ink Signature: "Milford Haven" 2¾x1½. David Michael Mountbatten, Marquess Milford Haven III (1919-1970) was the Viscount Alderney before 1921 and Earl of Medina between 1921 and 1938. Mountbatten was the descendant of several famous historical figures: the Russian writer Aleksandr Pushkin, Peter the Great's African protégé: General Abram Petrovich Gannibal, and Queen Victoria (he was her great-great-grandson). During World War II Milford Haven served in the Royal Navy. He was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for taking the destroyer Kandahar through a minefield while attempting to rescue the cruiser Neptune in 1942. In 1943, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his work on Malta convoy operations. In 1948, he retired from the Navy. Ink bleeding along right hand of slip of paper. Irregularly cut.
