Plenipotentiary to Bavaria, 1p, 7½x9¼, affixed to slightly larger cardboard.
Munich, 1831 November 13. To unknown recipient. Begins:
"Sir". In full: "I received your letter of 25th ult with my
account - in which I perceive a credit to me of £3. s3 [three pounds, three
shillings] for one star only whereas there were more delivered respecting
which & also the sum credited to me - I should wish to speak to you. I
expect to be in England shortly - Your obedt servt". David Montagu Erskine
(1776-1855), the son of Thomas Erskine, Lord High Chancellor of England,
served as Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Bavaria until his
retirement from active service in 1843. Erskine, who had been educated at Eton
and Cambridge, became a barrister in 1802 and entered Parliament
in 1806. Shortly thereafter, he was sent to the U.S. as an envoy from Great
Britain, remaining until 1809. He married his wife, Frances, the daughter
of General John Cadwalader of Philadelphia, in 1799. Recognized for her
beauty, Frances' portrait by Gilbert Stuart is considered one of his
masterpieces. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "i" of Erskine.
Lightly soiled. Ink notes (unknown hand) at lower left margin. Overall, fine
condition.
