DAVID H. MORGAN
Signed, typed 1944 letter congratulating Harry Truman, his former business partner, on being nominated for Vice President
Typed Letter signed: "Dave", 1 page, 7½x10¾. Wichita, Kansas, 1944 July 23. On letterhead of Diller Oil and Gas Corp. to "My dear Harry". In full: "I was overjoyed at your selection as the Democratic nominee for this United States of America. I know of no greater honor that could be bestowed upon you and I am sure you richly deserve it and will do everything within your power to faithfully discharge the duties of this high office, next to the highest within the gift of us Americans to bestow upon any individual, and of still any higher office if circumstances should so decree. I had the premonition that the result would be just as it occurred, hence my telegram to you that you would accept the nomination if tendered, and you did it so sincerely and terse that I thanked my Lucky Star that I was alive and able to hear the complete proceedings with my own ears. I am so incredibly Happy and may God bless your every act and continue to guide your destiny. As you no doubt already know, this action by the Democratic Convention sealed the fate of the Republicans in November. Franklin D. is a very wonderful man and a Master Politician, but he could never have won with Henry Wallace as a running mate and this with all due respect to Mr. Wallace. I think Mr. Roosevelt is to be congratulated for having you as his Running-mate. Maybe he had something to do with the arrangement? Well, Harry, I'll wager that Bess is a very Happy Woman, and so she should be for she has succeeded in making a most able Statesman out of her Jackson County Farmer Boy. Please convey to her my sincere Congratulations and that I am in hopes of seeing you all in the not too distant future. Emergency demands of the Army Air Force for still more B-29 Superfortresses has made it necessary for the Boeing plant to go on a 7-day week and 10-hour days for the next 10 weeks, so I will be unable to get away before October 1st, but I'll be seeing you soon. May I hear from you at your early convenience? Again congratulating you, believe me I remain, most sincerely yours". Ink note in Morgan's hand: "original = Independence, Mo./cc = Washington, D.C." David H. Morgan was Truman's partner in an unsuccessful oil drilling venture (1916-1917) and deeded a house to Truman in 1920, although Truman never lived in it. Harry Truman always remembered old friends and tried to keep in touch with them. David Morgan was no exception. Whether or not Morgan is correct in his judgment that President Roosevelt would not have been re-elected with his second Vice President, Henry Wallace, on the ticket, the President's decision to drop Wallace in favor of Senator Truman was a fateful one. FDR died on April 12, 1945. Henry Wallace arrived at very different conclusions about Soviet intentions in the aftermath of World War II, and ran against Truman from the Left, as candidate of the Progressive Party, in 1948. Fold crease, not near signature. Lightly soiled at upper edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
