DAVID NIVEN
The actor signs this still from his 1959 film Ask Any Girl in blue ink
Photograph signed: "David Niven" in blue ink, b/w, 10x8. English actor David Niven
(1910-1983) served with the Highland Infantry in Malta before he worked as a lumberman,
news reporter, gunnery instructor to Cuban revolutionists, representative of a London wine
firm in the United States, and finally, in 1935, an extra in Mutiny on the Bounty. After
several strong supporting roles in the late 1930s, Niven had just had his first role as a
leading man (opposite Ginger Rogers in 1939's Bachelor Mother), when World War II
broke out. He became the first, and one of the few, British actors to leave Hollywood to
re-enlist. After the war, all his roles were starring ones. He notched a Golden Globe for The
Moon is Blue (1953), and played Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days (1956).
Moreover, he won the 1959 Academy Award for Best Actor for Separate Tables (1958).
Although often cast in light comedies, such as the Pink Panther series (1964 and after), Niven
could also play strong action roles, one of which being his performance in The Guns of
Navarone (1961). Ink notes on verso in an unknown hand. Paper affixed on verso. Slightly
toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
