DAVID O. SELZNICK. Check signed: "DO Selznick", 7¾x3.
Los Angeles, California, 1939 February 11. Check No. 979, drawn on
Selznick's personal account at the Citizens National Trust & Savings Bank,
Los Angeles, payable to Y. Frank Freeman for $550. Endorsed on
verso: "Y. Frank Freeman/YF Freeman" and "For
deposit/Margaret Harris Freeman". Signed ten months before DAVID O.
SELZNICK's Civil War epic, Gone With The Wind, premiered in Atlanta on
December 15, 1939. On January 29, 1940, GWTW received ten Academy
Awards, including a Best Picture Oscar for Selznick. After the Oscars were
awarded, Y. FRANK FREEMAN, the President of Paramount Pictures, received
nationwide attention by saying that if the South had as many soldiers as
Selznick had hired as extras in the scene of the wounded at the Atlanta railroad
station, Selznick and his Yankees would still be running. Selznick was pleased -
he had never been called a "Yankee" before. Lightly creased, vertical folds
not at signatures. Cancellation holes, bank stamps on front and verso (not at
signatures). Ink note (unknown hand) at blank left portion. Overall, fine
condition.
