The British Member of Parliament signs off letter to an admirer in
black ink
Typed letter signed: "David Owen" in black ink. 1 page,
8¼x11¾. Written on personal House of Commons letterhead. London, England.
November 15, 1989. Addressed to Mr. Peter McGath of Tramore, County Waterford,
Ireland. In full: "Thank you for your letter. I am enclosing a signed
photo for your collection, as requested. Yours sincerely". David Owen (b.
1938) is a British politician. Under the Labour Governments he served as
Navy Minister, Health Minister and Foreign Secretary; he is best known has a
co-founder of the Social Democratic Party and served as its leader from 1983 to
1987, and from 1988 to 1990. He went on to serve as a European Union peace
negotiator in the former Yugoslavia form 1992-1995. After being designated
the Baron Owen in 1992, he became an independent crossbench peer in the House of
Lords, where he served as the Treasurer and member of the Palme Commission
on Disarmament and Security Issues, as well as a member of the Independent
Commission on International Humanitarian Issues and the Carnegie Commission on
Preventing Armed Conflict. After a few years serving as Chancellor of Liverpool
University from 1996 to 2009, he published Nuclear Papers (2009) which made
available newly declassified government papers from his time as Foreign
Secretary. Normal mailing fold. Toned. Creased throughout. Stained throughout.
