David Rice Atchison signs an autograph document.
Autograph Document Signed: "Atchison Attorney/for plaintiff", 1p, 7¾x12½. Lafayett Circuit, (Missouri), 1833 June 25. The 25-year-old lawyer writes, in part: "John Harris states that he holds a bond on the defendants James G. Harris and John Smith in Substance as followeth, Twelve months after date we or either of us promise to pay John Harris Executor of the estate of Peter Harris Deceased the sum of four hundred fifty seven dollars, for value of his recd...Yet the Said debt remains unpaid wherefore the Judgement for his debt and damages for the detention of the same together with costs." David Rice Atchison represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate from 1841-1855, serving as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1846-1850, 1852-1854. Many historians contend that Atchison on March 4, 1849 was President of the United States. Since President Polk's and Vice President Dallas' terms ended on a Saturday and President-elect Taylor and Vice President-elect Fillmore were not sworn in until Monday, historians reason that Atchison was President for one day, Sunday, March 4, 1849. Horizontal folds. Shaded at folds. Lightly stained. Lightly nicked edges. Very slight shading at signature. Overall, fine condition.
