DAVID R. ATCHISON
David R. Atchison signs an autograph document.
Autograph Document Signed: "Atchison Atty/for Defendant", 1p, 6¼x8. No place, no date. In full: "Hill vs Allen/Case/In the above cause the clerk will issue subpoenas for Samuel Clevinger Joseph Roy Joe Clevenger Nathan Simpson Samuel Sutter Thomas Kern, Alexander Bogart, witnesses on the part of the Defendant." Also signed: "Renbrow Riggs" and "William Milsaps". Lawyer David Rice Atchison represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate from 1841-1855, serving as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1846-1850, 1852-1854. Many historians contend that Atchison on March 4, 1849 was President of the United States. Since President Polk's and Vice President Dallas' terms ended on a Saturday and President-elect Taylor and Vice President-elect Fillmore were not sworn in until Monday, historians reason that Atchison was President for one day, Sunday, March 4, 1849. Folds, not at signatures. Irregular left and lower edges. Overall, in fine condition.
