DAVID OBEY
The U.S. congressman pens his name on this 3x2½ card in blue felt pen
Signature: “Dave Obey/ - Wisconsin -”, in blue ink, 3x2½. David Ross “Dave” Obey
(b.1938) was a U.S. congressman from Wisconsin's 7th district. He is currently the state
of Wisconsin's longest-serving member in either house of Congress. Upon graduating
from University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1962, Obey became a real estate broker. In 1963,
Obey was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1963, serving until 1969. During his
time in Congress, Obey chaired the commission charged with writing the House's Code of
Ethics. One of the most notable reforms he pushed through was one that requires
members to disclose personal financial dealings in order to bring to light any possible
conflicts of interest. He also did two stints on the House Committee on Appropriations
(1994-1995; 2007-2011). In 2010, he got into a spat with California congresswoman Maxine
Waters, disagreeing with her insistence on lending her name to a public school employment
training center. After deciding not to run for reelection in 2011, Obey began working for
Gephardt Government Affairs, the lobbying firm founded by former U.S. House Majority
Leader Dick Gephardt. Fine condition.
