DAVID R. LOCKE "PETROLEUM V. NASBY"
Signing with his real name and also with his humorous pen name,
"Petroleum V. Nasby".
Signature: "D R. Locke/Petroleum V Nasby/PM", 5¼x2. David
R. Locke (1833-1888) was a journalist who purchased the Toronto
Blade in 1867. He was an ardent opponent of slavery, and supporter of
the Union. He wrote humorous essays under the name of "Rev. Petroleum V.
(for Vesuvius) Nasby", a lazy, dishonest and semi-literate supporter of the
"Confedrit" cause. His chief ambition was a "Post Orfis" appointment from a
Democratic administration. Abraham Lincoln loved the "Petroleum Nasby"
letters, and sometimes read them to his Cabinet. Locke continued to write as
Nasby during Reconstruction, dropping the pseudonym when it was no longer
topical. Slightly toned. Left edge slightly frayed. Paper remnant on bottom
right corner. Light surface creases. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
