DAVID R. LOCKE "PETROLEUM V. NASBY"
Signature of Lincoln's favorite humorist, with his real name and his
pen name
Signature: "D R. Locke/Petroleum V Nasby/PM", 4x2½ slip,
affixed to a 7¾x5 slip. David R. Locke (1833-1888) was a journalist who
purchased the Toronto Blade in 1867. He was an ardent opponent
of slavery, and supporter of the Union. He wrote humorous essays under
the name of "Rev. Petroleum V. (for Vesuvius) Nasby", a lazy, dishonest and
semi-literate supporter of the "Confedrit" cause. His chief ambition was a
"Post Orfis" appointment from a Democratic administration. Abraham Lincoln
loved the "Petroleum Nasby" letters, and sometimes read them to his Cabinet.
Locke continued to write as Nasby during Reconstruction, dropping the pseudonym
when it was no longer topical. Heavily toned. Stained from adhesive. Corners
lightly worn. Light surface creases. Adhesive residue on verso. Slightly soiled.
Otherwise, fine condition.
