DAVID STEINBERG
The comedian and director is shown from the chest up
Inscribed Photograph signed: "Dear Howard, I Love Your Name. All the Best/David/Steinberg", Color 8x10. Described by the New York Times as "a cross between Woody Allen and Lenny Bruce", Canadian comedian, actor, director and writer Steinberg, born in 1942, shared two Emmy Awards for writing for the 1991 and 1992 Academy Awards and received nominations for directing (Seinfeld, 1990; Curb Your Enthusiasm, 2000). The one-time rabbinical student has been associated with some of the most successful TV series in recent years, either as a director, producer, writer or actor, with credits on Newhart, Designing Women, Mad About You, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Steinberg decided to become a comedian and joined The Second City in 1964, but struck out on his own after a few years. He appeared off-Broadway and on in 1967 and 1968 before making appearances on the Playboy club circuit in the 1960s; he reportedly confused his audiences, who were used to borscht belt and mother-in-law jokes.Steinberg started appearing on TV in 1968 and got his first writing gig on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. However, a "blasphemous" performance (at least that's what the angry letters called it) about Jonah and the Whale got him kicked from that job. Steinberg's popularity crested in the 1970s, helped along by the relaxing of TV censorship in the wake of All in the Family; he even hosted his own variety show, The David Steinberg Show, in 1976 and 1977. With his comic career waning, he took "legitimate" acting jobs and stepped increasingly behind the camera; accumulating directing credits in over 50 movies and TV shows. Slightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
