DAVID TORRENCE
The early twentieth-century stage and silent-film actor signs his
good wishes and name in black ink
Autograph note signed: "To Miss Martha Townsend/ With all good
wishes from/ Yours very sincerely/ David Torrance/ 26th March 1925" in black
ink. 1 page, 4x5. Scottish actor David Torrence (1864-1951) was starring in
early silent films (Tess of the D'Urbervilles, The Prisoner of
Zenda) by 1913. He preferred the Broadway stage, but greater financial
rewards lured him back to films in the 1920s. By the time he appeared in talking
films, starting with Disraeli (1929), he was playing character roles.
Unlike his equally famous brother Ernest Torrence, typecast as a villain,
David often played sympathetic roles. Toned. Left edge frayed. Light surface
creases. Slightly soiled along edges. Otherwise, fine
condition.
