The 3rd Earl of Mansfield signs this slip of paper clipped from a letter
Autograph Fragment Signed: “October fourteenth/ [several lines difficult to decipher]/ From Mansfield” 3¾x2¾ affixed to a 7½x3 sheet of paper that also contains a 1¾x2¼ clipping of the history of the title of Earl of Mansfield. David William Murray (1777-1840), 3rd Earl of Mansfield, earned a degree from Christ Church, Oxford, becoming a Doctor of Civil Law in 1793. Subsequently, he joined the army, eventually earning the rank of colonel. First he served in the Eastern Regiment of the Middlesex Militia, and then with the Perthshire Regiment of the North British Militia. Beginning in 1803, Mansfield functioned as the Lord Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire and filled the post until his death.Mansfield was elected a Knight of the Order of the Thistle in 1835. Show-through of text written on verso to front. Paper containing signature is stained toned, worn, and is rippled in several places. Paper to which signature clipping is affixed is irregularly shaped and slightly rippled along bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
