DAYTON E. PHILLIPS 3½x2 card signed in blue ink by the Tennessee congressman Signature: “Dayton E. Phillips/ M.C. Tennessee”, in blue ink, 3½x2. Dayton E. Phillips (1910-1980) was an American politician who represented the 1st congressional district of Tennessee as a Republican. Phillips attended Milligan College in Tennessee from 1929 to 1931. He then enrolled at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1934. In 1935, Phillips joined the bar in Tennessee. While practicing law, Phillips attended National University Law School and earned his J.D. in 1936. From 1938 to 1942, he served as the attorney for Carter County. Then, from 1942 to 1947, Phillips was the district attorney general of the first judicial circuit of Tennessee. He served in the Army during World War II (1943-1945) and after returning home, he turned his attention to politics. Phillips was elected to the 80th and 81st Congresses (1947-1951). In 1950, he was unsuccessful in securing a renomination and went back to practicing law in Elizabethton, Tennessee and was also the chancellor of the First Chancery Court of Tennessee. Lightly toned.
