Program promoting his new book Present at the Creation, signed in black felt tip on the front
Inscribed program signed: "To/Jack/Cleary/Dean Acheson", in black felt tip, 7x10 closed, 21x10 open flat. Dean Acheson (1893-1971) was appointed Assistant Secretary of State by President Roosevelt in 1933, but resigned that same year due to differences with FDR's foreign economic policy. Brought back in 1941 as Under Secretary, he served through World War II and helped forge the postwar Bretton Woods system for the world economy. As Secretary of State (1949-1953) in the Truman administration, he was a key architect of the containment policy, devised to curb the expansion of the Soviet Union and of communism without resort to war. As one of the "Wise Men," informal senior advisors, he advised Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon (a former foe). Acheson received a Pulitzer Prize in History (1970) for his memoir Present at the Creation. Light surface creases. Lightly toned. Stray ink mark on bottom right corner of front. Otherwise, fine condition.
