DEAN G. ACHESON
Pulitzer Prize-winning Secretary of State sends thank you letter, signs his name in blue ink
Typed letter signed: "Dean Acheson" in blue ink. 1 page, 7x9. February 6, 1950. Washington D.C. On Secretary of State letterhead. In full: "Dear Mr. Mumford: I appreciate very deeply your thoughtfulness in writing me as you did on January 29. Your kind words brought me a great deal of pleasure. I am glad that Mrs. Mumford shares your sentiments. Sincerely yours". Dean Acheson (1893-1971) was appointed Assistant Secretary of State by President Roosevelt in 1933, but resigned that same year due to differences with FDR's foreign economic policy. Brought back in 1941 as Under Secretary, he served through World War II and helped forge the postwar Bretton Woods system for the world economy. As Secretary of State (1949-1953) in the Truman administration, he was a key architect of the containment policy, devised to curb the expansion of the Soviet Union and of communism without resort to war. As one of the "Wise Men," informal senior advisors, he advised Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon (a former foe). During the Cuban missile crisis (October 1961), he was sent to Europe to brief French President De Gaulle and German Chancellor Adenauer. Acheson received a Pulitzer Prize in History (1970) for his memoir Present at the Creation. Normal mailing fold. Corners creased. Light surface creases. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
