DEAN SANTORO
Actor sends friendly letter to John Willis, editor of Theatre World, about updating his biography with a new picture
Autograph letter signed: "Dean" in red ink. 1 page, 8x10. May 15, 1969. In full: "Dear Jack, Since the picture you have of me is horrendous, I'm taking the liberty of sending you a better (and more up to date) one. Also - don't know if you knew I was in "Hadrian VII" for the last 5 months of the run. And am now a regular player in "As the World Turns" (Dr. Paul Stewart). Love to you and to Stanley - how is the redecorating coming along?". Actor Dean Santoro (1938-1987) began his career trying to break into theatre, and performed on Broadway in Hadrian VII (1969), Borstal Boy (1970), and The Little Black Book (1972). Eventually though, he turned his focus to Hollywood television and movies; his televisions include Barnaby Jones (1974-1975), Lou Grant (1978-1982), and Dallas (1985). He also appeared in the movies Don't Call Us, We'll Call You (1971), Dogs (1976) and O'Hara's Wife (1982). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Toned. Creased throughout. Top edge frayed. Staples in top margin. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
