DEEMS TAYLOR
Taylor signs his name in pencil on a musical quotation from a piece titled "Peter Ibbetson Act I"
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "Deems Taylor", 1p, 9x6 printed musical manuscript paper. Inscription is in unknown hand, signature in pencil. On the lower staff, Deems has written several bars of music that he has titled: "Peter Ibbetson Act I" (in ink). DEEMS TAYLOR (1885-1966) was a composer, music critic, screenwriter, narrator for two Hollywood films and editor of "Musical America". He had more performances (30) of his works at New York's Metropolitan Opera than any of his contemporaries. His works performed at the Met include The King's Henchman (1927) and Peter Ibbetson (1931). Taylor, who also wrote Cap'n Kidd & Co. (1908), The Echo (1909) and The Breath of Scandal, or The Mistress of the Seas (1916), also composed the music score for the feature film Janice Meredith (1924). In 1940, he was the narrator for Walt Disney's Fantasia, and he served a similar function in 1947's Barber of Seville, an Italian language version of the opera for which he wrote the screenplay. In 1941, Deems appeared as himself in There's Magic in Music, a film about the prestigious National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Composer JIMMY VAN HEUSEN (1913-1990), born Edward Chester Babcock, wrote the Academy Award-winning songs "Swinging on a Star", "All The Way" and "Call Me Irresponsible". After signing with Paramount in 1940, he collaborated with such lyricists as Johnny Burke and Sammy Cohn and also wrote the musical scores for a number of films, including Going My Way (1944), Road to Utopia (1946), Road to Rio (1947), The Tender Trap (1955), Anything Goes (1956), Pocketful of Miracles (1961), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Betsy's Wedding (1990). Lightly soiled. Stray pencil marks at right margin, right edge irregularly cut. Pencil erasures beneath name of opera. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
