Signed and dated sentiment of the "low comedy" stage star
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours truly/Denman Thompson/Jan 29 /92", 6½x1¾. Actor, theatrical manager and playwright Denman Thompson (1833-1911) studied legitimate theatre, but soon found that his talent lay in low comedy, proven on stages in London, Toronto and later the US. In 1875, Thompson created a vaudeville sketch featuring "Joshua Whitcomb", a hayseed in the big city. Within a decade, this character had proven so popular that Thompson expanded it into a 4-act play, The Old Homestead. Although it was not performed in New York until 1904, The Old Homestead was a big hit on the road, and made a fortune for Thompson. Other plays followed, several of which were turned into successful films after Thompson's death. Among these was one of the earliest serials, The Hazards of Helen. Toned, lightly creased. Fine condition.
