DENNIS COLLINS
Cartoonist writes letter of thanks to fan for his foresight, signs
his name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Dennis Collins" in black ink. 1
page, 4¼x3½, affixed to irregularly cut paper 5¾x4. In full: "Dear Mr.
Croxford, Thank you for your interesting letter and press-cutting copies which I
return as they may be useful again. You are certainly doing a service to
Archives and Museums, and besides recording history I think you are making it! I
am pleased you like the "Perishers". Yours sincerely". Cartoonist Dennis
Collins (d. 1990) studied drawing at the Birmingham School of Art before
eventually settling in Liverpool. During WWII, Collins' art skills were
essential drawing maps for the Royal Engineer's Survey and the War Office, as
well as creating identity papers to help smuggle British agents out of
prisoner-of-war camps for the Secret Service. After the war he worked
freelance in advertising until some of his characters were picked up and
developed in the Daily Mirror, turning into the very popular comic strip,
"The Perishers", which first appeared in print in 1958. Collins retired
in 1983 and was awarded Humourous Strip Cartoonist of the year by the
Cartoonists club. Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Binding hole in
attached paper. Otherwise, fine condition.
