DENNIS COLLINS
Popular cartoonist signs 8½x3½ clipping of his popular comic strip
"The Perishers"
Printed art signed: "Best wishes - / Dennis Collins" in black
ink. B/w, 8½x3½. Clipped from the "Daily Mirror". Affixed to a thin piece
of paper. Cartoonist Dennis Collins (d. 1990) studied drawing at the
Birmingham School of Art before eventually settling in Liverpool. During WWII,
Collins' art skills were essential drawing maps for the Royal Engineer's
Survey and the War Office, as well as creating identity papers to help smuggle
British agents out of prisoner-of-war camps for the Secret Service. After
the war he worked freelance in advertising until some of his characters were
picked up and developed in the Daily Mirror, turning into the very popular comic
strip, "The Perishers", which first appeared in print in 1958.
Collins retired in 1983 and was awarded Humourous Strip Cartoonist of the year
by the Cartoonists club. Toned. Creased throughout. Irregularly cut. Otherwise,
fine condition.
