of twelve men who were influential in Los Angeles and Hollywood music and radio,
including a number of radio pioneers like Al Jarvis, acknowledged as the first
American disc jockey, and Jim Hawthorne, one of America's first free-form DJs.
New York-born Irish tenor DAY (1916-1988) hosted his own radio
show from 1946 to 1954. For 25 years, he was closely linked with Jack
Benny in films, radio and television and was famous for his trademark phrase
"Gee, Mr. Benny." Day also sang for animated films, including Johnny
Appleseed (1948), and appeared in a number of feature films, including
Buck Benny Rides Again (1940, his debut), Music in Manhattan
(1944), I'll Get By (1950) and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved
Hollywood (1976). GRANT (1923-2008) was an American radio
personality, television producer and, at Hollywood community functions like the
unveiling of new starts on the Walk of Fame, the honorary mayor of
Hollywood. He was also the producer of the Hollywood Christmas Parade
since 1978. He started out as a radio personality in his hometown of
Goldsboro in 1939 and received national attention for his coverage of the Irby
Holmes murder trial in North Carolina. He entered the Army Air Corps and hosted
a daily radio show for servicemen in New York City. In 1952, he hosted the first
national fundraiser to send American athletes to the 1952 Summer Olympics.
HAWTHORNE (1918-2007) was a radio personality who was often billed simply
as "Hawthorne" and was the leader of the Royal Order of Hoganites, the
name for his fan club. He began in radio in Denver, Colorado and eventually
wound up at KXLA in 1947. He was one of the first free form disc jockeys in
the United States, with an eclectic playlist and who would play records
backwards and at the wrong speed, insult his sponsors and even remix
commercials. On TV, he hosted one of the first late night talk shows, This is
Hawthorne, in the early 1950's on KLAC-TV and, in the 1960's, a children's
show in Hawaii called The Checkers and Pogo Show. MORGAN
(1910-1994), born Stanley Morner in Prentice, Wisconsin, appeared in a number of
films, including The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Kitty Foyle (1940),
The Fighting 69th (1940), The Desert Song (1943, which
showcased his fine, operatic voice for the first time), Hollywood
Canteen (1944), God Is My Co-Pilot (1945) and Won Ton Ton,
the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). He also starred on the 1959 TV
series, 21 Beacon Street. BRADY (1924-1985) starred in many B
pictures, beginning in 1948, mostly Westerns and other action films
such as He Walked By Night (1948), but including an occasional comedy
(The Model and the Marriage Broker, 1954). Later he played supporting in
roles in such films as The China Syndrome (1979) and Gremlins
(1984). He made many TV guest appearances, and had his own series for one
year (Shotgun Slade, 1959). An apparently rising star in such war
and Western films as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), handsome actor
AGAR (1921-2002) was largely consigned to low budget science fiction
movies after his divorce from Shirley Temple in 1949 (the 27-year-old actor
had married 17-year-old Temple in 1945 after a whirlwind courtship). He
later appeared in three Westerns with friend John Wayne (1969-1971) and
was often sought for film and TV character roles. REED (1908-1996) is an
American actor who left Cornell University at the end of his freshman week when
he was offered a job at a Hoboken stock company. He then found success on
Broadway and came to Hollywood in 1933 for the first of his over 70 TV shows and
movies to his credit. OWENS (1912-1982) was an Emmy-nominated singer,
songwriter and pianist. A star of Don McNeil's Breakfast Club, one of the
longest-running network radio shows, he gained the nickname "The Cruising
Crooner" for cruising through mostly female audiences on the Breakfast Club and
singing love ballads to the women while sitting on their laps and nuzzling
close. He was a popular singer who had big successes with songs like
The Hukilau Song and I'll Weave a Lei of Stars for You. He
also had his own TV show called The Jack Owens Show, alternately The
Brunch Bunch, in the early 1950's, which earned him two Emmy nominations.
JARVIS (1909-1970), was an American radio personality and author who, in
1934 became Los Angeles's first disc jockey and is often credited with
being America's first DJ. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fans might
know him as Eden from the B-movie The Phantom Planet (1961). COOPER
was one of five disc jockeys at Los Angeles' KLAC in the 1950's. Lightly
toned. Signatures are separated by red lines, which touch some of the
signatures. Sheet is discolored from adhesive, which shows through on front and
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
