brother. His most memorable film roles have included Breaking Away
(1979), The Right Stuff (as astronaut Gordon Cooper,1983), The Big
Easy (1987), Great Balls of Fire (as rock icon Jerry Lee Lewis,
1989), Dragonheart (1996), Frequency (2000), The Rookie (as
real-life middle-aged baseball rookie Jim Morris, 2002), and in the same year
Far From Heaven. That performance as a closeted gay husband in
1950s suburban Connecticut earned him several film awards but no Oscar
