DEREK "THE TURK" SANDERSON
The Boston Bruins "bad boy" is shown on the ice, near the Maple Leafs' goal
Photograph signed: "Derek Sanderson/#16". Color, 9½x7½, framed to an overall of 11x9¼. After several years in other hockey leagues, Derek Sanderson (b. 1946) won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie in 1968. As the center of the defensive line for the Boston Bruins, he helped the Bruins to Stanley Cup championships in 1970 and 1972. Sanderson was soon known for his flamboyant life style, driving a silver Rolls Royce and wearing mink coats. In 1972, he became briefly the world's highest paid athlete ($2.6 million), leaving the Bruins for the World Hockey Association's Philadelphia Blazers. Injuries and alcohol abuse shortened Sanderson's career, and at one point he was homeless, sleeping on park benches. Help from former teammates, notably Bobby Orr, got him into rehab, and Sanderson put his life back together. He became a popular sports announcer, and - in the 1990s, a successful wealth management advisor to professional athletes. Frame slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed, not by HistoryForSale.
